United Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
On the 17th of Jumada Al-Ula, 1351 AH, a pivotal Royal Decree declared the unification of all regions under the name “Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” with King Abdul Aziz Al Saud as its first monarch. The official announcement took place on the 21st of the same month, a date now celebrated annually as the Kingdom’s National Day.
King Abdulaziz established the emblem of the new state with two crossed swords and a date palm symbolizing strength, resilience, and prosperity. The flag, a green rectangle bearing the inscription “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger” in white, with a sword beneath, was also adopted, representing the country’s Islamic identity and sovereignty.
Under his leadership, King Abdul Aziz modernized the Kingdom’s governance structure. He instituted a government in Hijaz, created the office of General Prosecutor in 1926, and appointed Prince Faisal to lead it. By 1931, a council of deputies was established, followed by several ministries to manage the country’s affairs effectively. Diplomatic ties with other nations flourished, reflecting the Kingdom’s growing influence.
King Abdul Aziz also prioritized social reforms, settling nomadic tribes in agricultural communities and forming an army of volunteers. He supported the Palestinian cause and was a founding member of the Arab League in 1945, marking his commitment to Arab unity and cooperation.
Establishing Sharia Law in Saudi Arabia
King Abdu Aziz’s primary goal was to establish governance based on Islamic Sharia law, rooted in the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. His commitment to this vision has continued to shape Saudi Arabia, as the Kingdom still adheres to Sharia law today. He emphasized his dependence on Allah for guidance and strength, believing that this reliance would ensure success. In his speeches, including the opening of the first Shoura Council in 1349H, he affirmed that all laws must align with Islamic principles, rejecting any legislation contrary to Sharia. His leadership solidified the Kingdom’s identity as an Islamic state.
Bottom line
Saudi Arabia’s National Day, celebrated on September 23rd, marks the unification of the Kingdom under King Abdu Aziz in 1932.
